It's All in the Details

Welcome to my dressing room!  I have organized and with the help of my dear husband got all the furniture moved in and everything hung.  There are a few pieces still missing that I'll talk about at the end of this post.  But first, let's talk about the details.  PS If I can find links to any of the pieces I will add them to the text in the post for easy searching.  Enjoy!

When you first walk into the room, you immediately see this white 5 drawer dresser.  My dad actual got this for free from one of his clients and had initially stained it brown for our master bedroom.  It fit perfect for my needs in my dressing room so I sanded it down and spray painted it in a high gloss white and changed the knobs.  It holds my clothes that I like to keep folded or out of sight.  Drawer 1 is bras (which I keep laid out and slightly leaned on top of each other to not bend them); Drawer 2 is socks, sports bras, and gloves; Drawer 3 is underwear, Drawer 4 and 5 are tank tops (each separated into individual stacks by style i.e. long, racerback, spaghetti strap, flowy).
Above the drawer is this cute pinboard that I found on clearance for $4 at TJ Maxx!  It's perfect to hold my sunglasses (I keep one in my car and one in my purse too).
On the top of the dresser I have a picture of my husband and I at our wedding with a card from flowers he got me for Valentine's Day a few years back, a glass vanity tray from Goodwill that holds my watches and change from pockets, a small white candle holder from Ikea that holds clean sample jars from Sephora to be used during travel, a WoodWick candle I got from TJ Maxx, and a silver jewelry box that I got from Ross about a year ago.
When you come around the room you see this dress rack that I got from Ikea.  Obviously all my dresses are here but I also tend to hang my bath robe at the end.  We had to put our router and modem in here so they are just hanging out on the dress rack for now but I am planning to put them in a cute box to be hidden.
In the first corner there is a picture of my mom and I when I was an infant, a flower picture that I got for $3 on clearance at Ikea, a small white nightstand that I got for $80 at Home Goods which holds my extras, foundations/powders, hair accessories and nail care items.  I am planning to do an in depth post on make up organization in the future.
And this is the little table that started it all!  This is the vanity I mentioned in the previous post.  It holds a lamp given to me by my Meme that I spray painted silver, a lighted mirror, a leopard print placement I got on clearance from Kirklands, an empty box, some lotion, Kleenex, and hand sanitizer.  The chair was given to me years ago by my aunt and uncle and I spray painted it white to match the vanity.  The cushion is from Ross and is recovered in simple white fabric from Walmart.
Inside the vanity table drawer is where I keep things I don't use on a daily basis.  I used to keep my daily stuff in here but I realized that it actually took more time when it was in there because I was constantly having to open and close the drawer when I needed something or I would end up leaving everything out on the table top.  So now it has eyeshadow bases, pigments, extra lip balms (I get these for super cheap with coupons) and other miscellaneous items.
Next to the vanity is this little table I got from Target about 2 years ago on clearance for $20.  By the way, if you haven't noticed yet, I am a clearance shopper.  Some say it's in my genes :)  This table holds two acrylic 5 drawer organizers from Muji that houses most of my make up, a mirror candle plate that holds a single white rose (fake) from TJ Maxx, and a white bird and nest ring holder also from TJ Maxx.  On top of the Muji drawers, I used a short but larger glass vase for my face brushes (which has gold rock vase filler but I don't recommend it), a smaller glass vase for eye brushes, two larger brushes and some eye make up remover sticks.  On the bottom half of the table is just a stack of miscellaneous magazines and 2 curtain tie backs (I haven't decided if I'm going to use them or not).
As you come around to the next wall, this is where we hung my closet rods and housed the two bookshelves for my shoes.  The rod is actually thick PVC pipe that is held by white brackets that Lowe's sells in a set of 5.  This was the most cost efficient way for me because I needed such a long rod.  The guy at Lowe's was actually nice enough to cut the 2 pieces of PVC pipe to 6 foot (the size I needed), so that they would fit in my car.  As mentioned in the previous post, the two bookshelves I got on Craigslist for $25 for both but they are just laminate shelves you can get at Target, Walmart, Lowes, etc.
A closer look at the rods and brackets.  I also chose to use all white hangers in here to keep it uniform but eventually I want to replace the plastic ones with white velour non slip hangers.
If you notice the droopy boots, that's what the pool noodle is for.  I am going to cut it in pieces to put inside the boots so they will stand straight up to hold their shape.  On top of this bookshelf I used a silver metal letter organizer that I got at a garage sale to organize my clutches.  On top of the other bookshelf is a Juicy Couture bowler bag and a picture of my daughter's feet with our wedding bands on her toes that my amazingly talented Aunt Debbie took when she was a newborn.
On this small wall is the actual closet of the room which holds slips, jackets/coats, and a foldable hanging closet shelf that holds my t-shirts.  My tennis shoes, Ugg boots and rainboots are also in there.  The mirror hanging on the door was from Target.  The little table was a find from Goodwill while I was in college for $5 and it has been brown then black and now high gloss white.  On top of the table is another picture of my husband and I from our wedding, two glass candle holders (7" and 9" for height) from Hobby Lobby with white candles that I don't burn and my perfume collection.  The white cup holds perfume samples.
My necklaces are hanging on a large bulletin board that I got for $2 at Goodwill and spray painted white.  This was such as easy project but because of the porous material it did take about 4 coats of paint to be even.  The white flower on the bottom is probably from a garage sale but my Grandma Green gave it to me a few years ago because she thought it was pretty.  I agree and it makes me think about her when I see it.  :) The necklaces are hung by clear thumbtacks...remember it's all in the details!
On the first shelf of the table is a photo box I got from Ross for $4 which holds my nail polish (hidden from my sweet 3 year old), a picture of my husband and I holding hands watching a sunset on our first trip together before we were married and an empty candle jar that hasn't found a purpose yet.  The bottom shelf just holds more magazines.
This is the newest addition that my husband hung for me last week!  It's a white towel bar that so nicely holds my scarves.  The scarf hanging on the back of the door is square and didn't hang right on the rod.
 Thanks Pinterest for the idea!
This wall holds some shopping bags that I thought looked cute there.  The one on the bottom is from Mood, the huge fabric store in New York City that is used on Project Runway.  My meme and Grandpa Doug got it for me when they went to NYC because we were all obsessed with that show.  :)

I hope you enjoyed this adventure into my dressing room and maybe got some ideas for yourself.  I want to end this rather long post by saying that of all this I hope you remember to find a place for yourself.  As mothers and wives, our families become our top priority (which they should be) but we also forget to take care of ourselves.  That also means finding a space that is just for you.  For me, this space allows me to not let myself get complacent with ponytails and sweats.  It reminds me that I enjoy looking nice not just for my husband, but also for myself.  It makes me feel pretty.  Coco Chanel said it best when she said, "A women should be two things, classy and fabulous!"
