I have been really searching hard for an inexpensive gold pharmacy style lamp, but have unfortunately had no luck. Then Pinterest came to the rescue again and I found this! While I love her faux antiqued lamp, I really wanted gold for our office. So instead of finishing like she did with the flat black paint, I simply stopped with the gold.
So here's the lamp before. It's the Barometer Work Lamp from Ikea and only $29.99! Most other gold work lamps run upwards of $150! It started out with a nice clean polished nickel finish...but not at all what I was looking for. So out came my beautiful gold spray paint I used in this tutorial to paint the hardware on our desk.
Once you have the lamp screwed together (no tools required, just screw the pieces together), you'll want to spray it down with a primer meant for metal. I chose Rust-Oleum Professional Primer Spray Paint
based on reviews I read online.
I let the primer dry for about 15 minutes then gave it a coat of the gold spray paint.
I gave our lamp 3 thin, even coats of the gold paint. One tip for lamps like this that have bending "necks" is to make sure to move the movable parts (in this case the "neck" and the "head") when you are doing your second or third coats so that you don't have any parts of the lamp not painted.
I am really happy with how this lamp turned out and can't wait to get the rest of the office done and ready to show y'all. I hope you enjoyed this quick DIY, and as always, thanks for stopping by!

Will the paint bubble from the heat of the lamp
ReplyDeleteNope :) The lamp only allows you to use a max of 40w bulb so it doesn't get terribly hot. We've been using it since I posted this and nothing has gone wrong :)
ReplyDeleteWhat gold spray paint did you use? Thanks! :)
ReplyDeleteIt's Rustoleum Metallic Gold, you can see the can in this post.
