Now unlike the Top 10 Everyday Tools post, this one really is focused towards those in detached and semi-detached houses because those are the folks who have lawns. However, some of these items will also benefit those condo owners who might have small patio gardens. Again these items are not listed in any particular order because we believe they are all needed so let's get started!
- Mower (Push or Riding). The size of your mower is going to depend on how much grass you have to mow and the type of terrain (hilly vs flat) you have. We have always had semi-small lots because we've lived in neighborhoods so we bought a push mower. The mower we bought from Sears 4 years ago is still working hard though!
- Weed-eater. Another Craftstman product from Sears for us. Ours is considered a 3 in 1 and is able to attach other "tools" to the handle. This is where the Edger (number 10) comes in. However, this item is necessary to keep around you the sides of your lawn, near trees, curbs and bushes looking clean and manicured.
- Shovel
. Self-explanatory. You will need it, maybe not as a daily or weekly item, but you will need it. Adam's tip is to NOT get one with a wooden handle. You have to make sure to wear gloves or it causes blisters almost instantly.
- Garden Gloves
. My husband has a pair he bought online and I have a pair similar to these that we wear everytime we work outside (he's better at remembering to wear them than I am, but he's the one more susceptible to coming across something you don't want on your hands).
- Waterhose with
Attachable Sprinkler. Our first house had a sprinkler system so we didn't use our waterhose as often but since then we have needed it to water the yard which we do weekly. Tip: Water your yard early in the morning or late in the evening when the temperatures are cooler. If you water in the middle of the day the heat will evaporate the water before it has a chance to sink into your yard.
- Rake. Again self-explanatory, but needed especially if you have a yard full of trees. Same idea as the shovel for the handle...no wooden handles. Ours is fiberglass and we love it.
- Spade. My go to tool in our garden. Adam very rarely uses this but I use it almost every time I get in the dirt. My came in a handy garden set
like this one only mine is orange...I might one day switch to the super cute pink though!
- Watering Can. My go to for watering all potted plants and my square foot garden. Waterhoses produce too much water to easily water smaller areas like a pot. The one I linked here is actually on clearance at Target right now and I snagged it for $13!!
- Lawn Bags. We use these for piling up leaves, small limbs, random trash that may have blown in the yard, and dog poop. Sorry but it's a reality with pets. Adam bought an extra cheap black trash can and we leave a bag open in the trash can to collect lawn junk and poop throughout the week.
- Edger. Ours connects directly to the weed-eater handle which makes it very convenient. While we waited a while to purchase this one, Adam does use it every time me does the yard and I have to admit it makes a big difference.
My big tip for tools is do your research and don't be afraid to spend a little more to get the better quality. But also remember that sometimes the most expensive are just as good as the medium level items.
